Summary

Canterbury's bins page now calls a different API Gateway endpoint (n6ljrw455m.execute-api.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com/prod/get-bin-dates). The old zbr7r13ke2 one returns 403 for every request, which is where the "403 Forbidden" error has been coming from. The new endpoint rejects the default python-requests user agent, so the request now sends a browser user agent along with the Origin and Referer the site itself uses.

dates also comes back as an object now instead of a JSON-encoded string, so both shapes are handled. I've added the red, blue and communal food bin types that show up in the responses, plus timeout=30, raise_for_status() and a ValueError when nothing comes back.

Testing

  • UPRN 10094583181 (input.json): 28 collections, October to January

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved collection-date retrieval for Canterbury, with support for additional recycling and communal food collections.
    • Collection dates are now displayed in the configured format and sorted chronologically.
    • Requests that fail or return no usable collection dates are reported as errors rather than producing incomplete results.

Walkthrough

Canterbury’s scraper now requests collection dates from a bins-widget API. It handles date data provided as an object or JSON string, maps seven collection types, and sorts the formatted results.

Changes: Canterbury scraper

Layer / File(s) Summary
API request and date parsing
uk_bin_collection/uk_bin_collection/councils/CanterburyCityCouncil.py
The scraper posts the UPRN to the bins-widget API with browser-like headers and a 30-second timeout. It parses dates provided as an object or JSON string, maps seven collection types, formats and sorts results, and raises errors for HTTP failures or missing collections.

Normal lookups are not shown to be affected, but an unexpected API response would fail with an unhandled error. This is a bounded risk that can be addressed with response-shape checks.

Explanation

The title names the main change: Canterbury's bin-collection scraper now uses the council's new bin dates endpoint. The raw summary and PR objectives confirm this. The title is specific and concise, and it fits the changeset. The title also uses the conventional "fix:" prefix, which fits a change that restores working behaviour after the old endpoint returned 403 for every request.

Validate the response shape before reading dates.

If a 200 response body is a JSON array, response.json().get("dates") on line 52 raises AttributeError. raise_for_status() does not check the body, so no earlier guard prevents this. If dates is a JSON array, or a JSON string that decodes to an array, dates.get(key) on line 60 raises AttributeError too. In both cases, the parser fails with AttributeError instead of the ValueError used for other malformed data. Check that the top-level payload and dates are mappings, and raise ValueError otherwise.
